Why is sleep important for babies?
On average, a newborn baby sleeps 16 to 19 hours a day and wakes up every two to three hours. The children need less sleep after about half a year and the intervals between meals become longer. After a year, the babies only take a nap twice a day and usually sleep through the night. In order for a child to have a comfortable and safe place to sleep, the choice of the right cot is very important. Before buying a baby cot, everyone has to consider what expectations they have of the bed. The babies can immediately have their own bed and sleep as close as possible to their parents. Of course, everyone has to think about how much space they have available for a baby cot. The baby cots are not only available in different shapes, but also in different sizes. How long the beds are to be used plays an important role. There are baby beds that grow with you and some parents also like to buy new and larger beds over time.
The different
cribs
Sollein baby bed, then there are different sizes. There are beds suitable for every age of children. With every baby cot, however, it is very important that a restful sleep is made possible and that a baby has sufficient safety and protection. Up to the age of six months, an extra bed is usually very popular for the initial period. The newborns can sleep in it and the parents can monitor the baby. At the age of four to six months, the weighing function is often popular and a baby cradle can be suitable for this. If mobility is important to parents, then many parents also reach for a bassinet. A crib is very suitable if the children are between 2 and 4 years old. The children here have an increased urge to move and they are protected by the bars. The purchase of a crib is recommended from the age of four and no protective bars are needed. The extra beds are very popular for very young babies from birth up to the age of about six months. The beds have been designed so that they can be attached to a parent’s bed without gaps. Only one side part has to be folded down or dismantled when attached. With the extra bed there is an important closeness between parents and child. Babies sleep better scientifically when parents hear the sounds of breathing. The development of the child and the parent-child relationship should also be positively influenced. It is easier for children to find a quiet sleep near their parents. The extra bed also enables comfortable breastfeeding, as the baby only needs to be taken over. Since such a baby cot has such a small size, it is also suitable for rather small rooms.
Cribs and cots for children
With The lattice beds are generally available in two different sizes and these are 140 x 70 centimetres and 120 x 60 centimetres. The lying surface is limited by the bars of the crib and thus there is the fullest protection for the child. In addition, the maximum visual contact is enabled and the parents have good control. For the bars, the distance should not be greater than 6.5 centimetres and not less than 4.5 centimetres. The babies can reach through the sticks, but cannot pull larger objects into the bed. So that the children don’t get stuck, the head can’t fit through. The baby cot with grids is also very suitable as a playpen. If parents have to leave the room, babies can be placed in the cot. The cribs often grow with the child and can easily be converted into a cot or an extra bed. The models can thus stand out due to their long service life. The slightly larger space requirement is of course a disadvantage of the mesh beds. Due to the weight, the beds are placed in fixed places and therefore everyone should consider where the beds are to be placed. This cot is often more expensive than other models, but it can also be used for several years. It is also advantageous that the babies are accustomed to their own cot right from the start. The slatted frame is often adjustable in height so that the children can be easily removed. A baby cot is usually followed by a crib, and after the children are accompanied until they are teenagers, it is a long-term purchase. Whether you buy a cot or a baby bed, you should always pay attention to the quality. With a cot there is then the combination of fun, play and sleep. The security and also Stability plays a very important role here. The single beds for children are popular as a classic bed and the dimensions are adapted to the children. Compared to adult beds, the beds are narrower, lower and shorter. If families have several children, the bunk beds are also very popular. A bunk bed is a bunk bed, but the lower bed is missing. Otherwise, there are also youth beds and theme beds for the older children.
The materials of a baby cot
Usually a baby bed consists of three materials and these are MDF, chipboard and solid wood. If you choose wood, you should make sure that there are no sharp-edged corners or rough areas. Solid wood is most frequently used for the beds. The solid wood bed with its open-pore structure promotes a good room climate. In case of dust, the electrostatic charge is prevented and the antibacterial effect is achieved. Solid wood is particularly characterised by its longevity and stability. Beech is very stable and a hard wood. The spruce is inexpensive, the weight is low and the wood is elastic and soft. The birch offers the light color, is a hard wood and yet flexible. The weight of the birch is low and it is very resilient. A soft wood is pine wood and it is unbreakable. The wood is light and inexpensive, but can fade in the sun. The oak has distinctive grains and the wood is firm. The wood does not warp and is heavy. Oak wood is characterised by its strength and durability. Often a baby bed made of chipboard is found and this is glue, wood waste and pressed sawdust. As this is wood waste, chipboard is very inexpensive. Compared to solid wood, it should be noted that the stability is lower. Many parents use chipboard less because coating varnishes and glues can also release harmful substances. MDF is a medium density wood fibreboard, which is produced by the defibration of wood residues. Compared to chipboard, the material is finer and the surfaces can be painted more durable and better. The material is nevertheless also very favorable for a baby bed. However, formaldehydes can be evaporated and these can be hazardous to health. However, the health risk could be reduced, because today mostly resin-containing glues are used. However, if the humidity is high, mould can develop. In comparison to chipboard, the breaking and bending strength is higher.
It is also important to find the right baby bed mattress for which we have published our own guidebook.
The surfaces of the baby beds
The surface of the beds can be treated in various ways. Many beds are natural, oiled, glazed or lacquered. It is important that only saliva-resistant lacquers are used for the lacquers. If a baby cot is offered on the market, it usually complies with European standards. Although the wood with the sealant is no longer breathable, it becomes hygienic and easy to clean. This is important for the parents because dirt can be easily removed. If a wood is glazed, the grain remains visible. The surface is breathable and yet protected. It is important that there are no harmful substances in the glaze. If a cot is soldered, the breathability is present and the antistatic effect improves the room climate. We’ll use oil to cut the wood. but scratches and stains can occur more easily than with glazes and varnishes. Many parents assume that the natural models are the healthiest and best beds. With untreated wood, however, it is much easier to absorb dirt and it is not easy to remove. The surface of these cribs is therefore rather unhygienic. For humidity there is the high absorption capacity and therefore the wood can warp quickly. If places are not ventilated, mould can also form.
