Lawn fertilizer – what is it?
Every lawn owner knows how important lawn fertilizer is for his green space. These are organic and mineral substrates. These can also be purchased in liquid form. By the administration of the important plant nutrients, turf develops healthy and defensive. Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus are among the necessary ingredients of fertilizers. They must be carefully selected as a percentage and present in the special fertilizer.
In addition to the organic lawn fertilizer, artificial fertilizer is also available. With the organic fertilizer the lawn receives a natural fertilizer. This is free of health risks for humans and animals in the garden. Organic fertilizers are more environmentally conscious. The artificial fertilizer is more effective because it unfolds its mode of action more quickly, but does not retain it for a long time. Organic fertilizer releases its effect later, but retains it over a longer period of time.
The correct time, the amount of fertilizer and the recommended application should always be observed. If too much fertilization is suspected to be applied, the mode of action quickly changes. What should actually help to create a beautiful lawn can even turn out to be damaging to the green space. Also, only missing substances should be added. A soil analysis shows what is really missing or already sufficiently available. For example, special component fertilizers can be used to specifically address a few missing substances. Excessive fertilisation is also an unnecessary burden for the environment, as too many nutrients can get into the groundwater. The lawn fertilizer can be distributed, for example, with a practical spreading trolley.

Please attach great importance to a very good quality. Poor fertilizer will damage the lawn rather than make it grow in full splendour. In the If your products are bad, always put the sum on it, because time, money and work must be reinvested. Good quality is also noticeable in the application. Our information will help you to stop having to look at your neighbour’s lawn with a longing gaze.
How it works
The purpose of a lawn fertilizer is always to provide the lawn with nutrients that help it grow healthily. The result is, if ideally fertilized, a dense and green lawn. A well-kept lawn also knows how to defend itself more successfully against diseases. The right fertilization can easily deal with any lack of minerals and nutrients. It is important to deal with the different lawn fertilizers. Not every fertilizer can be exactly ideal for your lawn. The need for the various nutrients results from the soil conditions of the lawn.
The different varieties
Who has the choice, has the agony! This does not have to be the case, because we give you an overview of the different products. Knowing your soil conditions well makes it easier for you to choose the perfect fertilizer. You must attach importance to a very good quality, because success depends on this.
Fertilizer (mineral fertilizer)
Synthetic fertilizers are produced synthetically. They are obtained from mineral salts by physical or chemical processing. The advantages of mineral fertilizers lie in the rapid release of the components and in the targeted use of desired chemical substances. They are used in forestry and agriculture as well as by private gardeners. Artificial fertilizers can be specifically adapted to soil conditions and the needs of plants. Multi-epositive properties can be combined accordingly by the choice of additives. There are also special mineral lawn fertilizers for lawns, which are effective after only two to three days. Due to the rapid release of the substances, the effect and thus the nutrient content of the soil can, however, decrease again after only a few weeks (14 to 21 days). When using mineral lawn fertilizer, it is important to ensure even distribution and the required quantity (see manufacturer’s recommendation). Otherwise uneven results and even burns of the blades of grass on the lawn can occur. In principle, fertilizers should only be used when necessary.
For this purpose, the existing soil conditions and soil quality as well as the requirements of the plants must be known (soil analysis). This allows the required quantities and missing substances to be determined precisely. If there are only a few values in imbalance, this can then be specifically addressed with component fertilizers (for example, only magnesium or nitrogen deficiency). This prevents some substances from being over-fertilized if they are already available in sufficient quantities. Mineral lawn fertilizer may only be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s safety instructions as it may be harmful to animals and other plants if handled improperly. Children and animals should be kept away from fertilizer storage areas or the fertilizer should only be stored in lockable cupboards. Pets must also be kept away after fresh fertilization of the lawn until the fertilizer has penetrated the soil through irrigation or rain.
Organic fertilizer (long-term organic fertilizer)
Organic fertilizers originate from biological sources (plants and animals) or are synthesized. The leaching of organic fertilizers is clear less than artificial fertilizers, which is why they work for longer periods of time and are also referred to as long-term fertilizers. But it also takes longer until they unfold their full effect. They are used in agriculture (e.g. slurry) or in gardens (compost). Other typical organic fertilizers are molasses, horse or cow manure, urea, horn shavings, bone meal, guano, chicken manure or fish meal. For the garden sector, the trade has packaged organic fertilizers available, also especially as lawn fertilizers. For better distribution and handling, there are also specially prepared fertilizers, such as cattle manure as dried pellets.
Organic fertilizer can not only replace or enrich missing substances, but also improve soil structure and quality. Also an overfertilization is hardly possible. In the case of organic lawn fertilizers, the delaying effect must be taken into account, especially when preparing a sowing area. Therefore, an undersupply must be taken into account so that moss does not spread in the lawn. When applied to a lawn, there is no concern about the safety of pets compared to artificial fertilisers.
Mixture of mineral and organic fertilizer (mixed fertilizer)
Mineral-organic mixed fertilizers combine the positive properties of both fertilizers. Thus they have a long-lasting and immediate effect at the same time. The combination of positive aspects prevents mistakes in the application and is therefore recommended for beginners. Nevertheless, the requirements of the soil and the respective lawn type must also be taken into account here in order to achieve an optimum result. An under- or oversupply usually only becomes apparent later and often makes a quick correction difficult.
Lawn fertilizer with combined moss destroyer
If a lawn doesn’t grow well, moss likes to spread in it. This can be caused by incorrect care orfertilization, too little sunlight or strained lawns, for example after winter. Priority should always be given to remedying the causes as far as possible. For other cases a lawn fertilizer is suitable, which at the same time contains a moss destroyer. The trade offers these in the already correct mixing ratio. Here, too, the manufacturer’s recommendations must be followed precisely and safety measures (e.g. lockable cabinet) must be observed during storage. Some of these lawn fertilizers with moss destroyers even have a long-term effect. This can even keep persistent moss infestation in check for months. There are also particularly aggressive moss killers with lawn fertilizer, which are however less recommendable for longer application periods. They can then be harmful to lawns, other plants, pets and children. Alternatively, you should regularly remove the moss mechanically from the lawn with a scarifier.

Lawn fertilizer combined with weed killer
Of course, weeds are just as unpopular as moss in the lawn. In addition, weeds are usually very fast-growing and thus deprive the soil of the nutrients required for the lawn. Dandelion and clover in particular quickly establish themselves in a lawn and are also difficult to combat mechanically. Dandelion, for example, has a deep and fixed root, which cannot be removed with a cultivator. This requires special cutting tools to remove it permanently. Similar to lawn fertilizers with moss killers, the trade also offers special lawn fertilizers with weed killers. The herbicides contained in the herbicide spare the lawn but attack the weeds. Especially the stubborn clover can be easily removed from a lawn. Beware of adjacent flower beds! Also these plants can be damaged by it. A sufficiently large distance should be maintained here.

The time when weeds grow the most is between the end of spring and the beginning of autumn. This is also the best time to tackle the weeds in the lawn. When it rains, no application should take place, as this dilutes or weakens the agent and its effect. It is very important to observe the instructions for use and the safety regulations. The disposal and storage must also be strictly observed. These substances must not enter canals or watercourses. Children and pets must be kept away. However, increased weed growth often has causes that cannot be eliminated by chemical means. It is important to find and eliminate these causes so that there is no need for permanent use of chemical agents.
Tip:
Chemical agents should not be applied during or near rain, as this changes the concentration. A calm climate is best suited for application, as this is the only way to ensure distribution to the desired areas and not to neighbouring beds. At the same time an unequal quantity ratio on a surface is prevented by wind.
Lawn fertilizer for autumn and winter (autumn lawn fertilizer)
Winter is a strain on the lawn. Cold temperatures, sometimes in the minus range, less light and, depending on the region, longer periods of snow cover, demand a lot from a lawn. Often you will then also see this at the beginning of the year the lawn. In the autumn, a grass fertilizer can be used to prepare the lawn for the winter. Strong and healthy cell walls are an important criterion to make the lawn robust. In addition, autumn lawn fertilizers contain potassium. In addition, they contain iron and magnesium, which makes the rich green The colouring of the blades of grass promotes. Since there is no fertilization in winter, the autumn lawn fertilizer should have a long-term effect so that it is available to the lawn for months.
Liquid fertilizer for lawns
For larger lawns or professional use on golf and football fields, liquid fertilizers are sometimes used. Their advantages are the immediate availability of the effect and the possibility of distributing liquid fertiliser simultaneously with the water via the irrigation system. Special mixer taps are available for this purpose to ensure precise dosing. For the connection to a garden hose there are also ready-made packs, which can then be mixed with the escaping water and easily dosed.

Important purchase information
Before you buy a lawn fertilizer and apply it to the lawn, you need to know exactly what the soil is like. Not all soils are the same! The demands on the lawn fertilizer are therefore very different. There is not always a lack of nutrients, often there is even an oversupply, which also has a negative effect. Some soils are prone to moss formation, while others require the addition of lime due to their high acid value. Strong weed growth could indicate a lack of nitrogen. It is therefore difficult to determine the ideal fertiliser with the eye. Special institutes will make you an exact analysis of your soil for little money. All you have to do is take a sample from the garden and send it in. Soon you will know about the exact claims. Pay attention to the exact specifications of the manufacturer. You will find the ingredients and their proportions on the packages.
Reduce fertilizing naturally
In principle, the fertilisation of the lawn cannot be dispensed with. The aim is to make a rich green lawn your own. However, good lawn care ensures that fertilizers are used less frequently. For the environment and the purse with security pleasing! The intensive care is clearly noticeable. The collection of twigs and leaves begins in spring. This work must take place before the first time lawn mowing in March/April. The climate is decisive when the first mowing takes place. With a very mild winter and an early spring start, the lawn is ready for mowing relatively early.
The autumn and winter months are ideal for moss. It spreads unattractively and displaces the tender stalks of grass. The unattractive felting and moss can be easily removed. If necessary, it is recommended to use the scarifier. It also removes dead blades of grass and ventilates the ground. In order to prevent the grass roots from being damaged by the measure, a maximum depth of 3-4 mm should be set when scarifying. Often the lawn looks very sparse, but with some new lawn seed the problem is quickly solved. It has proved successful to fertilize with lime afterwards, so that the moss does not form again immediately. Lawn fertilizer is only applied when the lime has been completely released.
Info:
Fertilize when rain clouds are already showing in the sky. Thus, the lawn fertilizer can be immediately absorbed by the soil through the rainwater. This saves you work and water costs.
How often, how and when to fertilize?
How often the lawn is to be fertilized depends on various factors. A lawn that is constantly being played on is certainly very strained. Thus it needs up to four fertilizations per year. The ornamental lawn, which is basically used for viewing, gets by well with two fertilizers.
The first fertiliser application with nitrogen may take place in March/April. This way the growth of the stalks is stimulated. Potassium fertilization in May/June is recommended for strengthening. Nitrogen in the lawn fertilizer spreads the lawn well through the summer months in July. In August/September potassium proves to be a good tonic for the coming winter.
At best, fertilizing is done late in the day. The evening hours are perfect for this. Ideal if rainfall is to be expected the following day. Alternatively, the garden hose can be used. It is important to give water after fertilizing, as the sun would cause burns on the blades of grass due to the fertilizers.
Where can the product be bought well?
You have the choice between a dealer in the Internet or the specialized trade. DIY stores and garden centres offer an attractive range of products. One or the other Internet provider, however, has a much greater choice. The price-performance ratio is also positive here. Many current offers are to be found, thereby cash can be saved. Another advantage is the time factor when buying online. You can take your time with your choice – every day around the clock. So you are completely independent of the opening hours in the specialized trade. You save yourself the trip to the specialist shop and the annoying wait at the checkout. In the specialized trade the employees often lack important knowledge, so that a competent consultation cannot always take place.
The online trade provides the buyer with important information on all aspects of lawn fertilizer. With relatively few clicks useful information can be found for the purchase decision. Discount campaigns and vouchers are attractive, which are not uncommon when buying online. Incorrect purchases are not bad, as incorrect orders can usually be returned within two weeks. Of course only unopened goods! There are problems with the payment with the Don’t buy online. You will find all the usual payment methods.
Use iron sulphate only with great caution
In the fight against moss, iron sulphate is often used. However, this is not harmless!
Tips for dealing with iron sulphate:
– Wear gloves that handle iron sulphate.
– Eyes and skin must not get in contact with it.
– Keep children and animals away from iron sulphate.
– Do not apply pure iron sulphate to stone slabs and clothing, as unattractive stains will form permanently.
After one to two weeks, the dead moss can be removed from the lawn with the scarifier. Fresh lawn seeds and lawn fertilizer may then be used. Water it well!
