IPhone X

Apple has sent its new flagship, the iPhone X, into the race. But does it keep what it promises or was the announcement too full-bodied? What’s new, anyway? It is definitely the iPhone X with the highest price ever. Get to know it better here today.

How does an iPhone X work?

The new iPhone X in a class of its own has face recognition, a huge display and animated emojis. The brand new iPhone X was impressive in the test but still it is only the choice for the absolute hardcore fans of Apple.
The future of this modern smartphone, as imagined by Apple engineers, begins with a circular movement of the head, turning the head twice clockwise. Then the Smartpone reports “Face ID done” on its screen. His face verification has thus been established. From now on, the smartphone will only be unlocked if the user holds it in his hand and can be identified by the infrared camera with a deep look into his face.
First of all, it should be noted: Of course this new iPhone X (say: “10”, not “x”) is of excellent quality. Of course, it’s also upscale and expensive. But is it a phone that should already be in your shopping cart today? It costs about 1149 EUR with 64 GB memory and about 1319 EUR with 256 GB. And since we are talking here about a device that seems to be very fragile after the first tests, or very easily fragmented, you need additional protection for it. The Apple Care program is available for 229 EUR, a protective cover is much cheaper.

New design – an almost rimless device!

The Apple company has completely redesigned the iPhone X. They made an almost borderless smartphone and equipped it with a very powerful chip and additional sensors. On the display the iPhone has X5.8 inches and thus actually very large. In comparison: the display of the much larger, unwieldier iPhone X 8 Plus measures only 5.5 inches. The device has almost 24 hours with one battery charge without counting the eight hours of night rest.
Apple has now for the first time installed one of the OLED displays in iPhone X, in which the black pixels actually remain dark and are not illuminated. This results in stronger contrasts, a point that has a positive effect on movies in particular, and a battery itself lasts longer. If you want to follow the experts, then Apple has integrated the best top display in the iPhone X, which is currently available in a mobile phone at all.

The camera on iPhone X

The camera is currently one of the best on the market. Selfie mode now allows portraits to be shot with a bokeh effect that blurs the background. The device analyses the lighting conditions in real time. Thus, the face can be illuminated interestingly, at the same time the background is totally blackened. That’s impressive – if it works: Like standing on a stage and being illuminated by a spotlight.
The rear camera (12 megapixels) delivers images of similar quality to those of the iPhone X 8 (Plus), making it one of the best on the market today. In daylight, a color-fast and high-resolution images succeed. The telephoto lens with a double zoom has only one f/2.4 aperture instead of one f/2.8. This means you can take better photos in dim lighting conditions. Both lenses now have an additional optical image stabilizer to reduce camera shake. The photography blog “Fstoppers” has uploaded a video to Youtube comparing the video footage of the iPhone X with that of a professional Panasonic GH5 worth 2000 US dollars. Conclusion: DasiPhone X can be proud of itself.

Slow motion videos with 240 frames per second can also be recorded in Full HD quality. 4K videos can now be recorded at 60 frames per second instead of 30. This makes the clips appear more fluid. You have to know that 4K60FPS consume 400 megabytes of volume per minute. A conventional Full HD movie consumes only 90 MB per minute.

iPhone X – A device that doesn’t need passwords

Most interesting, however, is the iPhone X‘s face recognition. Anyone who has seen iPhone X wanted to take it in their hands immediately to see the Face ID technology in action. Face ID is best suited to understand Apple’s vision. The technique works through two built-in infrared sensors that create both 2-D images and simultaneously a 3-D model of the owner’s face. The 2-D model is created from the 30,000 infrared points projected onto the user’s skin. This image is then converted into a numerical value and stored locally on the smartphone, in a specially secured area.
For many users, the technical subtleties and details are quite irrelevant. More importantly, they find the feelings behind it: How does it make you feel now? The answer is: as easy as if passwords never existed. The technology disappears in the background, it couldn’t be more comfortable at the moment. Finally a well secured device, the iPhone X, where everything was done to avoid annoying the user by typing in the passwords. What does the indentation at the top of the screen mean? Good-looking, she’s “not.” But in this iPhone X-Monobraue is the little killer feature: a new “TrueDepth camera”, with which the device is unlocked.
Apple has this function is called the Face ID. This is not only a simple face recognition, which can be outwitted with a single photo, as it is possible on many devices with Android. Instead, a complex infrared module works together with the camera. If the code determined matches that of the face that has already been saved, the smartphone is unlocked. Thanks to infrared technology, it even works in the dark. Everything happens in fractions of a second. The setup of the Face ID is very intuitive and it will be ready in less than a minute. The user has to circle his head 2 times in a predefined image section, as if he would draw the circle with his nose tip. Then that’s it.

Goodbye Hombutton on iPhone X!

The device is almost rimless. The Apple company removed the Home button here, which controlled a whole series of actions inside the smartphone. Here, for example, there was the unlocking by means of the fingerprint scanner. The freshly introduced, partly swinging wiping movements for navigation can be learned easily and quickly. In the video below you can see the individual features.

Does the Face ID work as promised?

Some people ask themselves the question: Does the Face ID work as well as advertised? Yes, after hundreds of trials – with different outfts like sunglasses, cap, wig, in the dark – you can tell: It worked reliably and at least for the most part. An unobstructed glance at iPhone X unlocks the device in a second. Afterwards it is important to stroke your finger from bottom to top to get to the start screen with all apps. An unnecessary point, Apple wants to prevent that messages are not missed by this will be.
Occasionally, however, technology reaches its limits. From a very oblique angle, the Face ID software sometimes has problems, as does the fact that the smartphone is too close or too far away from the face by more than one arm’s length. A larger optical change is enough to get the algorithm off the plumb bob. If you have a scarf in front of your mouth and nose or if you have shaved off your full beard, the passcode has to be entered additionally. Is the correct, extended Face ID to be the recorded data to the already saved 3D model. Because the built-in face recognition is networked with the adaptive neural network, Face ID is getting more accurate, Apple says.
All Face ID data is not stored in the cloud, but remains stored on the phone. Face ID therefore also works without an active Internet connection. Face ID is not perfect even with the many security features. The ones from the “Wall Street Journal” leveraged the technique with a pair of identical triplets. This is of course a peculiarity, but hackers worldwide will try to outwit the system or crack the existing security measures. The next time will show how high the security of Face ID actually is.

The Unicorn Speaks in iPhone X

The technology behind the unicorn is not only used to unlock the smartphone. Apps that contain sensitive data and previously required extra authentication using a Touch ID now also have access to the TrueDepth camera. These are the banking die apps, various smart home applications: such as the security cams from Arlo or the password manager iPassword. The alarm will automatically ring quieter when iPhone X detects you’re looking. The mobile phone also goes into standby faster if you don’t look at it directly – for energy-saving reasons. Incoming messages are shown in the Device on the display to protect privacy when the user of the smartphone looks at the display. These are all intelligent functions that combine convenience and utility.
There are also animojis: with them, users can transfer their own facial expression directly and in real time to large numbers of emoji, from unicorn to excrement heap. Afterwards you can send the little pictures to your friends, for example, whether with iMessage or in the form of a video file with Whatsapp and Co. Whether this gimmick will prevail is not proven yet, but it is funny. For many, the feature is already the best the new iPhone X has to offer.

Equipment: Lots of computing power paired with wireless charging

The remaining features of the iPhone X are largely the same as those of the 8er models. The built-in A11 bionic processor is currently the fastest you can find. In benchmarks – special programs to find out the performance – he definitely cuts a good figure: At Geekbench he scored more than twice as many points as his competitors in some areas. The new iPhone Xs are currently the fastest smartphones on the market.
The iPhone X can be charged without cables and can be charged with all Qi charging stations on the market – including those of IKEA furniture and IKEA lamps. The charging process takes longer than it takes on the cable. But you don’t have to tamper with the cable anymore. The battery life says Apple is two hours more than it is the case with the iPhone X 7. That’s realistic: At the end of the day with “normal” use, about 40 percent of the battery was left over. So it is easy to get over the day, but two days without electricity are not possible.

Toy tester has the iPhoneX

Even the smallest have the iPhoneX. The 4 year old toy tester has already unpacked the iPhone and uses it for his Youtube activities.

Conclusion: iPhone X has been reinvented

With the iPhone X, Apple returns to the magic of earlier devices. It’s the perfect balance for those who want a big screen, but find the Plus Model 8 too bulky. Cameras built into it are the best currently on the market, with their up to 256 gigabytes of memory, these devices no longer have space problems. Despite the absence of the Home button, the user is not able to operate the system. The new OLED screen looks great, Face ID face unlocking is a very exciting technique. It works amazingly well in daily use. It fundamentally changes the way we interact with our cell phones. Future iPhone X generations will certainly benefit from the technology. There are still some teething troubles to be cured here as well. However, Face ID probably only needs more time to function better – this will be brought to light by long-term tests.
An explicit purchase recommendation for the device is still not possible. With 1149 Euro (64 GB) and 1319 Euro (256 GB) the iPhone X is a very expensive device and is currently among the most expensive smartphones. Whether you need the face unlock and the large screen at an extra charge of 300 euros or prefer to use the already not cheap iPhone 8 (Plus), each individual has to decide for himself. Because the camera, the processor, the mobile phone technology and the processing can hardly be distinguished by differences. Comparable devices of the competition with an Android operating system are to be bought already starting from 500 EUR, for example Galaxy S8. This but they don’t work with Apple’s ecosystem. And the charger must be purchased separately.
