With grill cleaner against ash, fat and marinade residue
Residues of marinades, vegetable and meat leftovers, traces of cheese, ashes and burnt fat – this is what often remains on the grill when all the guests have gone and it comes to tidying up and above all cleaning. Oils, fats and protein crust on the metal of the grill and form layers, which can be removed after a long time only with much effort. To achieve an effect, often only intensive scrubbing and the use of aggressive cleaning agents can help. But meanwhile there are also more environmentally friendly and nevertheless very effective grill cleaners. This is all the more important as the cleaning of barbecue facilities places special demands. First and foremost, of course, there are the areas where food is prepared, which places special demands on hygiene. In addition, the appliances can only achieve the required performance if the individual components – and in particular the grill grid – are clean and free of residues. Old remains of food, oils and fats do not only contain the risk of bacteria, but also the danger that new food is permeated by a rancid and unpleasant aroma.
Cleaning crickets – a special matter
Grill cleaners should generally not be applied to aluminium, plastic or paint. However, the barbecue grill, which reveals specific problems during cleaning, is at the centre of the cleaning process anyway. The intensive contamination by hardly soluble substances, such as fat, oil and protein, is problematic as well as the uneven surfaces and the grid structure of the grill grate. The substances should therefore stick for a long time, i.e. not be too liquid, in order to be able to develop their fat-dissolving effect. With the often thick encrustations and burned fat layers this is exactly what makes the difference. about the simplicity of removing the residues. It should be noted that especially the soaking of the grills is often either very complicated or simply impossible due to their size. Therefore, the best cleaning agents are foam and spray or are applied with a brush. Thus, the grill cleaner adheres optimally and all by itself to all surfaces, even those that are difficult to reach.
Gentle grill cleaners protect environment and health
Very aggressive chemicals are often used when cleaning barbecue grills. They harbour certain dangers and are not particularly healthy for humans or nature. Used in these conventional grill cleaners are sodium hydroxide, the so-called caustic alkali (potassium chloride) or other chemical hazardous substances. These funds are effective, but require special precautions. In order to avoid skin contact or inhalation of vapours, it is recommended to wear protective clothing and glasses when using these hazardous substances. In addition, the use should take place exclusively outdoors. All in all, it can be said that the environment and health are exposed to greater stress, especially when cleaning regularly and using these conventional grill cleaners.
However, there has also been great progress in the production of alternative and gentler grill cleaners in recent years. The trade now offers a whole range of grill cleaners that do without caustic lyes and caustic alkali. These substances are neither highly flammable nor do they produce toxic vapours for the eyes and respiratory tract. They can be used without protective clothing and even in closed rooms. The grill cleaners can be used for garden grills as well as for cookers and extractor hoods in the kitchen.
All in all, it can be said that cleaning substances should be used in general when the grill surfaces have cooled down, otherwise toxic fumes may develop. Concentrates must be diluted and you should keep away from caustic caustic soda and potassium solutions.
Duration of exposure and required accessories
If environmentally friendly grill cleaners are used, often only a few additional accessories are necessary. It is important that not too much time passes after using the grill before you start cleaning. If possible, the grill grate should be soaked in a larger container. However, spray, foam and substances applied with a brush adhere well on their own, so that this process can be dispensed with. The duration of exposure is mainly determined by the degree of contamination. If this is not so intensive, a few minutes can be enough to let the fat and dirt dissolving effect take effect. The grill cleaner and the dirt it contains should then be wiped off with a lint-free, damp cloth or cloth. Microfibre cloths are recommended here. If the fat, oil and protein residues are very massive, cellulose can of course also be used. In general, it is best to leave the grill cleaner overnight, but in any case for at least two hours. Warm and clean water should then be used for wiping. In most cases, the soiling should be easy to remove afterwards. This is the most material-friendly variant. If the dirt cannot be removed in this way, wire brushes and scrapers must be used.
The use of grill brushes
If the grill grate is used intensively, the grill brush may become necessary even if the best cleaning agents are used. However, the material of the grate is subject to high stress so that this practice should only be used very sparingly. Around To get to difficult places, the grill brush (or scraper) should be shaped accordingly. In the trade there are corresponding utensils, which were developed from high-grade steel exactly for the use and make so an effective and uncomplicated cleaning possible. When using the grill brush, make sure that it has brass bristles wherever possible. This allows even burnt-in residues to be removed from the metal of the grill grate. Steel wool can also be used in individual cases.
These are the best grill cleaners
Ecolab Acti Grill Cleaner
This cleaning agent from the manufacturer Ecolab is one of the healthiest and most environmentally friendly grill cleaners available on the market. It also removes intensive and difficult to remove dirt and even burnt-in grease residues. The viscous cream adheres even better than liquids or foam to vertical surfaces, which can thus be cleaned easily. This agent is more expensive than other cleaners with a price of almost 30 Euro per litre, but because of its thicker consistency it is also very economical and you consume much less than other grill cleaners.
Prowin oven cleaner
This cleaning agent has an extraordinary cleaning power and is especially recommended for use on grills. By means of the enclosed brush the liquid can be applied even into the most difficult to reach parts. Here one can confidently do without the use of brushes or scrapers. The substance is applied, it is soaked and the fat and oil residues are simply wiped away. But also this grill cleaner with 30 Euro for 500 ml is not cheap. The possible damage to health must be taken into account here. In contact with skin, eyes and respiratory tract, this cleaner may cause severe burns. Intensive use may cause also cause corrosion damage to the metal. Due to its excellent cleaning power, this grill cleaner can nevertheless be the optimum cleaning substance for the grill grate, which is subject to heavy use.
Ballistol Kamofix
This too is actually a cleaner designed for cleaning kitchen utensils such as pans and pots. The advantage here is that Kamofi, unlike many other grill cleaners, can not only be used for steel, but also for cleaning aluminium. Kamofix is a cleaning foam that is stable, adheres even to difficult parts and perfectly removes grease, soot and even heavily burnt parts from the surfaces. Only the cleaning of paintwork should be avoided.
Brauns Heitmann Pure Soda Soda Cleaner
This soda cleaner captivates above all by its favorable price, of not even 10 euros. And it can only be purchased, and if necessary can even be produced itself. The soda powder is mixed with water and a spraying agent, but has to act longer than other grill cleaners. Another disadvantage is the strong alkaline effect, which makes it impossible to use for cleaning aluminium. For the cleaning of stainless steel this soda cleaner can be a good and above all cost-saving alternative.
Dr. Becker Brat crust remover
Also with this means it concerns with a price of 23 euro for 1 litre rather a more cost-intensive variant. However, you can rely on the cleaning power, at the latest at the second treatment. This cleaner is especially recommended for professional use. For normal household use, the chemicals contained are simply too problematic because they are highly corrosive. If you use this grill cleaner, you should always use glasses, mouthguards and protective gloves. The advantage of the Dr.Becker roast crust remover is that even the most stubborn soiling has no chance and the grill can be cleaned completely in any case.
k2r Oven cleaner
The main argument for using this grill cleaner is its price. This cleaning agent costs no more than five euros per litre. However, this also means that the cleaning power has to be reduced. The use of a grill brush or scraper remains únabdingbar even with long exposure times. If you want to save money and also don’t shy away from scrubbing, this cleaner is the right choice for you.
Weber Cleaner
If you want to achieve a quick and superficial cleaning of the grill, you can also use the cleaner of the manufacturer Weber. If the outer surfaces of the grill should shine again in the full shine, this cleaner is completely sufficient. This grill cleaner can do little against burnt-in fat residues and a grate burnt with egg whites and marinades.
Even old household remedies can help with barbecue cleaning
If you want to save some money when cleaning the barbecue grill and at the same time have the protection of the environment in mind, you should also use old household remedies. For example, the burnout of the grill grate is particularly effective. When the last sausages and steaks have disappeared from the grill, you can let the grill get really hot again and stir up the embers until the last fat residue is burned. The resulting soot can then be removed with a little effort and a grill brush at least roughly from residues.
The use of cold coffee or coffee grounds is also helpful. Apply the liquid or substance to the grill with a cloth and leave on overnight. And the next morning you can clean the grill of its biggest dirt. Also quite effective is the emery effect of Ashes. In the past, soap was made by mixing oils with ashes. This effect can also be used when cleaning the grill by applying an ashtray solution to the used grill grid. A curious tip, on the other hand, is to place the barbecue grill near an anthill when it is close enough. The crawling animals, experts swear, would rid the grill of food leftovers quite effectively.
résumé
The barbecue party can be a lot of fun, cleaning the grill afterwards is often not. However, after grilling is before grilling and steaks and sausages are only really delicious if they are prepared on a clean grill. When cleaning barbecue grills you should rather invest one handle and one Euro too much than too little. If you want to clean your barbecue efficiently and perfectly, there is no way around barbecue cleaners. If possible, the use of harder chemicals such as caustic potash and caustic soda lye should be economical. Meanwhile there are also ecologically harmless sprays, creams and brush spreads. If you don’t have them at hand, you can still fall back on old household remedies.
